Corporation Tax

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must comply with MTD for Income Tax. This is a significant change:

Keep digital records using MTD-compatible software
Submit quarterly updates to HMRC (not full tax returns — just summaries of income and expenses)
File an End of Period Statement (EOPS) after the tax year
Submit a Final Declaration (replacing the Self Assessment return)

Companies House

These are separate from HMRC deadlines but equally important for limited companies:

9 months after year endAnnual accounts filingFile abbreviated or full accounts with Companies House
Every 12 months from incorporationConfirmation StatementConfirm your company details are up to date (formerly Annual Return)
14 daysReport changesDirector appointments/resignations, registered office changes, share allotments

Penalties for Late Filing

HMRC penalties are automatic and can escalate quickly. Here are the key ones to be aware of:

Self Assessment: £100 immediate penalty for 1 day late, then £10/day after 3 months, then 5% of tax owed after 6 months
Corporation Tax return: £100 if 1 day late, another £100 after 3 months, 10% of unpaid tax after 6 months
VAT: Default surcharge system — repeated late payments increase the surcharge percentage
Companies House accounts: £150 if 1 day late (private company), rising to £1,500 after 6 months
Late payment interest: HMRC charges interest on all late payments at Bank of England base rate + 2.5%
